Course on Securities Statistics

The course was held in virtual format from April 10 to 14, 2023, and was co-sponsored by CEMLA and the International Monetary Fund. The main objective of the event was to train attendees from the various financial institutions and organizations of the CEMLA Members to adopt the general guidelines contained in the Manual on Securities Statistics.

The course developed a general framework for the collection, organization and presentation of statistics on different types of debt and equity securities, including those derived from asset securitization, consistent with international statistical standards. In addition, various readings covered conceptual aspects related to debt and capital securities, essential requirements to monitor the evolution of financial innovation.

The program covered specific topics such as the definition and characterization of securities and the different financial instruments classified by type of security. On the other hand, the classification of financial units and institutional sectors was addressed, as well as positions, flows and applicable accounting standards. Additionally, topics on securitization and other related operations and asset valuation principles was covered.

The program continued with securities classification systems, the conceptual framework of securities from whom-to-who and showing detailed presentation tables.

The course was complemented by pre-recorded presentations from speakers from the European Central Bank addressing the topic of security-by-security databases and the compilation of securities statistics based on security-by-security databases.

Workshops were held in teh evento applying the asset valuation principles reviewed on the presentations, as well as brief discussions of the results. The event finished with a brief introduction on the treatment of emerging topics.

The course was attended by 57 participants of 19 countries.
