Seminar on Remittances and Migration

The seminar was held from October 4 to 6, 2023 by CEMLA with the cooperation of Banco de España and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The main objective of the seminar was to promote an exchange of ideas and experiences between participating countries on different aspects of remittances, migration and financial inclusion. Thus, at the seminar there were 19 presentations on 13 countries, in addition to 3 presentations from the IMF Statistics Department and companies in the remittance industry.
The seminar agenda was made up of presentations by specialists from central banks, international organizations and the remittance industry who covered various aspects of migration and remittances. In particular, methodological aspects were discussed regarding the measurement of remittances, the sending of remittances from the countries of origin and by gender, as well as the analysis of the determining factors of sending remittances. In subsequent sessions, the receipt of remittances from households in Latin American countries was addressed. One session discussed the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on sending remittances to family members in their countries of origin.
In a virtual session, the need to establish mechanisms for surveillance and supervision of remittance transactions from the country of origin was addressed and an analysis of the assets of Latin American migrants in the United States was also presented. Finally, two presentations were made from the point of view of companies related to sending remittances.
The seminar was attended by 56 participants from 18 countries, both Spanish and English speaking.
