IX Financial Information Forum of Latin American and the Caribbean Central Bank

The meeting was held in hybrid format in the city of Lima, Perú on May 30-31, 2023, and was attended by a total of 127 representatives from 22 institutions and associates of CEMLA, representing 20 Latin-American and Caribbean countries, 5 European countries, and 1 Asian country.

The meeting was focused on the following topics: data science and central bank statistics, data governance, experimental statistics to monitor financial payments and market infrastructures, definitions, data collection and measurement challenges in the context of financial markets´ digitalization, secured financing transactions warehouse in central banks and bridging data gaps to monitor climate-related financial risks and climate-related financial risks.  The agenda included a keynote session by Bert Kroese, Director of the Statistics Department at the International Monetary Fund.

The discussion covered governance and organizational aspects of data science at central banks, the opportunities for the use of data science techniques at central banks, and applications of data science for financial statistics. In addition, the sessions examined challenges for central banks when incorporating statistics from digitalized financial markets for their data infrastructure. Finally, participants discussed about data reporting standards and discussed key challenges ahead for central bank´s statistical units.

Bert Kroese

Chief Statistician, Data Officer, and Director Statistics Department, IMF

Bert Kroese is the Chief Statistician, Data Officer, and Director of the Statistics Department at the IMF. Before joining the Fund, he worked for 25 years at Statistics Netherlands. He served in various expert, management, and director roles in the fields of methodology and economic statistics. He served as Deputy Director-General and CIO for IT and Innovation from 2013 to 2022, and as acting Director General in 2014 and 2020. Nationally and internationally, Mr. Kroese has been active in the fields of innovation and environmental-economic statistics. He chaired the UN Committee of Experts on Environmental-Economic Accounting (UNCEEA) for seven years, and co-chaired the Executive Board of the High-Level Group for Modernization of Official Statistics (UNECE). In the context of the European Statistical System, he has been co-chair and deputy chair of several innovation-related taskforces. He was also a member of the strategy team of the Dutch National Artificial Intelligence Coalition. Mr. Kroese holds a Ph.D. (honors) in mathematical statistics from the University of Groningen.
